TIME'S UP! CONCEPTS submittal phase is over.
You are now invited to VOTE around the unique CONCEPTS that were submitted, toward the ultimate crowdsourced user-centered sustainable model for protected area in the Valdivian Rainforest
1 Low-impact Human Access to Nature!
submitted by Lydia
This concept aims at maximizing human access to nature, to raise awareness about its global significance and get people involved in conservation while minimizing the negative impact of human interaction with critical ecosystems, that often lead to fragmenting the landscape and disrupting native species. In order to accomplish this, Samantha, Lydia, Abe and Lorrain propose creating an aerial mobility system that allows visitors explore the rainforest enabling a low-impact interaction with nature, inspired on the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in Vancouver, BC. Proceeds from utilizing this system would go to support conservation efforts in the Valdivian Rainforest.
2
2 Extreme Tree Camping
submitted by Julie
Julie, Jordan and Haley propose the implementation of Extreme Tree Camping services through a lottery system that randomly selects and limits the amount of human impact, as they anticipate a very high international demand for such unique overnight experience in the Valdivian Rainforest. This activity would be a very valuable source of income for local tree-climbing operators and to partially fund conservation projects in this high value ecoregion.

3 Trail Running Race
submitted by Rachel
Rachel, Kazu and Jordan propose the creation of a world-class Trail Running Race that offers a once in a lifetime experience to international outdoor sports enthusiasts and experts, while helping increase awareness about the high conservation value and global significance of the Valdivian Rainforest, first hand. All proceeds derived from this annual event would go to fund conservation and community development projects within protected areas in the ecoregion.

submitted by Pascual
Pascual Alba represents a group of local providers offering traditional wood handicraft and other non-wood products, and also ecotourism services in private protected areas of the Valdivian Rainforest. Currently not well organized, Pascual proposes the creation of an associative model that allows them consolidate their offer, formalize their businesses, and increase their market reach through promotion to facilitate commercialization of their products and services by means of a single and associative channel.

5 Monitoreo de Biodiversidad
submitted by Daniela
Daniela Mellado, form Valdivia, proposes to create interdisciplinary groups to monitor biodiversity in riparian, marine and terrestrial habitats of the Valdivian Rainforest. According to this Concept, these groups should include experts working together with local communities in charge of Citizen Science tasks, who will require basic scientific training and environmental ed programs, to enable job-creation applied to science and scientific-based tourism.

6 EXPERILE
submitted by Max
This Concept, submitted by Max from the Netherlands, proposes a system of sustainable services and initiatives that are meant to build awareness of the importance of preserving the Valdivian Rainforest, while being a source of income for its long-term conservation, through (a) Student Trips, (b) Big Annual Meetings and (c) Tree-Climbing Challenges. For (a) it will include gatherings of 16-year-old students from allover Southamerica to experience the Valdivian rainforest. For (b) the big annual meeting will be a three-day event for young people from allover Chile, in the shape of a festival. And finally (c), offering tree-climbing workshops that expose people to their fears while offering a unique experience in the Great Outdoors.

7 Tree-Top Sustainable Camping
submitted by Emily
Due to the beauty of its surroundings, young people in the PNW consider camping as a fundamental part of their lives, however some people do not practice this activity in a sustainable way. Extreme Tree Camping represents an opportunity to experience the Great Outdoors while helping preserve the environment by reducing your ecological footprint using extremely low impact accommodations while having a “blast”.

8 Eco-friendly Sustainable Camps
submitted by Allison
Allison and Trisha propose to increase the engagement of people in nature to raise awareness of the high conservation values of the ecoregion. In order to accomplish this, protected areas will be equipped with eco-friendly sustainable camps in the Valdivian Rainforest, providing overnight accommodations and expeditions into the forest for people to yield a greater understanding of the importance of restoration in the rainforest, all while remaining sustainable.

9 Whole-systems Eco-Park
submitted by Dominik
This Concept, from Christina and Dominik from Germany, proposes to protect critical areas of the Valdivian Rainforest through sustainable business-based integrated solutions, that together provide a holistic experience that focuses on environmental literacy and sustainable tourism through an Eco-Park. This idea is inspired on existing projects of the same kind in China, Bavaria and other globally renowned locations.

10 Research Center in the Valdivian Rainforest
submitted by Arvid
This Concept is inspired by several trips to the Rainforest, both Temperate and Tropical. The idea is to start a Research Center at the Valdivian Rainforest, that includes sustainable tourism programs for citizen scientists and international travelers. The proceeds of such economic activity will fund the center and help increase and accelerate research and conservation on the area.

11 Geocache Tours
submitted by Mike
This Concept is about offering geocache tours, getting people into nature, providing public interest for kids, teens and adults alike, throughout protected areas. Giving them a reason to learn about the forest, and raise awareness about environmental issues affecting such area. This can also include competitions and races to increase participation!

12 Educational Video Game !
submitted by Sarah
This Concept is based upon using “video game experiences” to attract Children to learn about the Valdivian Rainforest, and get them excited about protecting its high conservation values, in the long term. The value proposition targets both private households and schools, as a means for increasing environmental literacy through technology and gaming. All proceeds from sales of this product will go to support applied conservation projects on the main temperate rainforests of the southern hemisphere.

Incluyeron altos representantes de National Geographic, Global Forest & Trade Network de WWF, Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia), Georgetown University, Stanford University, University of Puget Sound, The Explorers Club de Nueva York, US Department of Commerce, International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group), Chile-California Council, Osa Conservation, Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge, Trust for Public Land, ZGF Architects, DRiVE, sólo para nombrar algunos.

PEOPLE

In today’s world, people are considered central in the design & development of new activities, products, processes, services, and man-made environments.

We call this user experience design and it focuses on finding quality and culturally relevant solutions that are user-driven, under the umbrella of continuous innovation.

Humans are also the leading factor of environmental degradation, as a result of our continuous influence on Earth’s wildlife to fulfill our needs, often stressing the essential to produce the superfluous.

Conversely, we hold the key to reversing such situation. How?

By rethinking and reinventing people-centered experiences, to skyrocket our positive impacts on biodiversity, especially those on what Wildlife Conservation Society has called The Last of the Wild.

THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

The exchange of capital, goods and services across international borders or territories in a globalized world is a key factor for countries to achieve economic growth and development.

Such exchange also involves movement of people across borders to visit and explore new geographies and unique destinations worldwide. This requires that efficient processes are put in place to support such movement, so the impact on national economies—and on their cultural and environmental assets—is positive.

“The highest priority should be to determine ways in which globalization can be successfully harnessed to promote protection of the environment, along with other shared objectives, as opposed to degradation of the environment.”

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

Biodiversity is the variety and variability of life on our planet. It is a vital foundation for human welfare and development.

Beyond ethical reasons to preserve biodiversity, it is the resource upon which food supplies, access to fresh water, pest and disease control, carbon storage, pharmaceuti- cals and bio-energy depend—something we often take for granted.

Its connection with the global economy is so deep that investments in biodiversity in the current financial markets have become more and more robust, based on the economic valuation of the services that biodiversity and ecosystems provide to humanity.

According to UNEP, the annual global economic impact of biodiversity loss is between 2 and 4.5 USD trillion, approximately 7.5% of gross world product.

INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE

Indigenous knowledge is of unquestionable cultural significance and critical importance, not only for First Nations but for all of us. While at increasingly high risk of disappearing, Indigenous knowledge is more and more considered a fundamental source of values and principles for grassroots-based development, and a powerful catalyst for sustainable, resilient and cost-effective planning processes worldwide.

Indigenous knowledge is to be carefully acknowledged, adopted and preserved towards achieving balanced and integrated conservation models in high value regions of the planet, as an organic counterpart to Science in understanding the complexities of Nature in land protection and sustainable management strategies.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change presents a major challenge to natural resource managers both because of the magnitude of potential effects of climate change on ecosystem structure, processes, and function, and because of the uncertainty associated with those potential ecological effects.

Concrete ways to adapt to climate change are needed to help natural resource manag- ers take the first steps to incorporate climate change into management and take advan- tage of opportunities to counteract the negative effects of climate change.
